About LDPC

LDPC is based on the similar, resident-led commission run by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. This commission published their final report and recommendations in June 2018.

We use the social model of disability rather than the medical or charity models of disability. The social model of disability says disability is socially constructed. This means that people are disabled by physical, organisational and attitudinal barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference. These barriers can be changed or removed so that people can live their lives the way they want.

We also use the cultural model of Deafness. This model focuses on the unique language, experiences and culture of the Deaf community, rejecting the ‘medical definition of Deafness’ as either a loss or impairment.

Our work has four main stages:

  • Stage 1: A review of important research and information, including examples of co-production
  • Stage 2: Hearing from local disabled residents and users of local services
  • Stage 3: Events and meetings to get information about people’s experiences and ideas for improvement
  • Stage 4: The final report and recommendations for change

We expect that it will take us about a year to produce our final report and recommendations.
